Meet Liam, Apple’s robot that rips apart iPhones
t last night's launch event, Apple not only announced the new 4-inch iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro, but also gave us a glimpse at its robot that takes apart iPhones.
Named Liam, the robot is used by Apple to take apart an iPhone after the device meets the end of its lifecycle and recover valuable materials that can be recycled, such as silver and tungsten. In a video shown at the event last night, Apple said that Liam "deconstructs the iPhone... so the materials inside parts can be repurposed."
For example, Liam can remove cobalt and lithium from the battery, separate the gold and copper from the camera, and extract silver and copper from the main logic board, among others.
